Local Area Networks were made because of the constant need for faster and more efficient exchange and distribution of information and computing resources within the companies.

Investment is paid off quickly through reduction of working time of the employees and parting the devices within PC network. For that reason, it is hard to find a company that hasn't LAN or is not thinking about installing it.

LAN includes following resources:

• Documents - one of primary reasons for network existence is because the document made on one computer can be viewed, corrected or edited on another one without copying on floppy, CD etc. Multiplying the documents will enlarge the productivity and make the access to the information faster.
• Printers - in the situation when computers are not in network and you want to prink a document, you have two solutions. First is to connect the printing device with your PC, install it and print the document, then to bring the printer from where you took it (and repeat the procedure every time you want to print something). The second solution is to copy the document on floppy, and then on the PC where the printer is installed and print it (only if that PC has the installation of the program where the document is done). If the computers are connected, all you have to do is to select the printing device on your PC and click the print button.
• Internet - if there is PC network, Internet connection can be divided.
• Fax servers - any computer in network can send and receive faxes

Example: you have one or more offices with two or more computers, printing machine and Internet connection. LAN gives the opportunity to the computers to access the printer and Internet, as well as exchange of the documents. Without LAN the printer would always have to be moved, documents copied on floppy disc and Internet access would only be possible for one computer.

For the reliability and security of the data and access control the best solution is installing Domain Controller (Server). In that case, everyone who uses the network has to log in (with username and password). Therefore, server gives the permission for using the resources of the network. On server, you can also check which computer is turned on or off, which user opened, copied, created, printed or deleted a document; errors and problems on network; results of anti virus scanning programs. Server can also be useful for saving the back-up data.
